When God Answers Some of the Prayers You Thought Might Never Be Answered

There are prayers that only a parent truly understands.

The kind whispered through tears after everyone else has gone to bed. The kind that asks God to soften hearts, restore relationships, and make a way where there seems to be none.

For many years, one of those prayers has been for my grown children.

Like many families, ours has walked through seasons of hurt and estrangement. Those seasons have stretched my faith in ways I never imagined. There were days I wondered if I would ever again sit around a table with my children, laugh together, or simply enjoy one another’s company.

This past week, I experienced a gift that I will treasure forever.

I was able to spend several precious days at an Airbnb with two of my sons, their families, my daughter, and my beautiful new grandbaby. We laughed, shared meals, talked, rested, and simply enjoyed being together. It wasn’t about expensive outings or elaborate plans. It was about the gift of presence.

And somewhere in those ordinary moments, I saw healing.

Not because every wound has disappeared. Not because every relationship has been fully restored. But because God allowed us to experience something beautiful together.

I also want to be honest.

While my heart overflows with gratitude for the relationships that are growing stronger, two of my children remain estranged from me. That is a pain I cannot fully describe. It is the kind of ache a mother carries deep within her soul. There are empty places that no holiday, no birthday, and no amount of busyness can completely fill.

If you are another parent walking this road, you probably understand that kind of heartbreak without needing many words. Yet even in that pain, I have learned that gratitude and grief can exist together. I can celebrate the healing God has brought while continuing to pray for the healing that has not yet come.

One of the Scriptures that has carried me through this journey is:

“Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.”
— Romans 12:12 (ESV)

Those words have become more than encouragement—they have become a way of living. Hope when I cannot see the outcome. Patience when answers seem delayed. Prayer when I have nothing else left to offer. Another verse that has comforted me countless times is:

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
— Psalm 34:18 (NIV)

How thankful I am that God does not ask us to pretend we are okay. He meets us in our brokenness. He is near to mothers with aching hearts, fathers carrying silent grief, and families longing for reconciliation.

This trip reminded me that healing is often quiet. Sometimes it looks like sharing coffee in the morning. Sometimes it looks like holding your grandbaby while listening to your children laugh. Sometimes it looks like conversations that feel a little easier than they once did. Sometimes it is simply the gift of being together.

I don’t know what tomorrow holds.

I don’t know when—or if—the remaining broken relationships in my family will be restored. I continue to place those hopes into God’s hands, trusting that He sees what I cannot and is working in ways I may never fully understand.

Until then, I choose to celebrate every evidence of His grace while continuing to pray for what is still broken.

If you are reading this while your own family feels fractured, I hope you’ll hear this from someone who understands: don’t give up hope, but don’t measure God’s faithfulness only by the outcome you long for. He is with you in the waiting. He is with you in the tears. He is with you in every whispered prayer.

This week reminded me that every hug, every conversation, every shared meal, and every moment together is a gift.

Today my heart is full of gratitude for what God has done, and still full of hope for what He may yet do.

I’ll keep praying.

I’ll keep loving.

And I’ll keep trusting the One who holds every heart—including mine.
